Toenail Fungus Infections
Toenail fungus infections (onychomycosis) are a common problem. Researchers say they are the most frequently diagnosed nail disease, accounting for 50 percent of all nail disorders and roughly 33 percent of all fungal skin infections. Toenails are affected about 4 to 7 times more often than fingernails. That’s because fungi thrive in warm, moist environment (like closed, warm shoes with perspiring or damp feet).
A toenail fungus infection can cause a thickening and build-up of discolored debris under the affected nail. The end of the toenail may be brittle or have a ragged edge. The toenail may also lift up from the nail bed.
Most toenail fungus infections are caused by a group of fungi, called dermatophytes, but can also be caused by yeast (Candida) and molds. Some nail infections are caused by bacteria.
An important part of fighting toenail fungus infections is to keep the affected nails dry. Use a hairdryer on the toenails after taking a shower or bath. Athletes should use a hairdryer on the toenails after working out to eliminate perspiration. It is also recommended that people who wash their hands frequently use an antibacterial gel rather than soap and water.
Zetaclear is the single best over-the-counter treatment for the permanent removal of nail fungus. This product is an interesting blend of herbal oils (Tea Tree, Almond and Jojoba) and other anti-fungal agents (undecylenic acid) to attack the fungus deep under the surface of the nail.
